Breakfast in the Classroom is Growing!
One of our most recent schools to launch a Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC) Program was Charles Drew College Preparatory Academy, so we decided to celebrate with them during National School Breakfast Week! Breakfast in the Classroom is a program that is proven to increase Breakfast participation, many times as much as 46%. It brings the school community together to help more students eat.
This week, our team, including the dining staff at Charles Drew ES, Maria, SNS Supervisor, Keith, Child Nutrition Programs Supervisor, Anthony, and Student Engagement Coordinator, Gillian, visited the Kindergarten classes as they started their day with a whole grain muffin, apples, and (optional) milk! We shared some Breakfast Week activity sheets, fun stickers, and some facts about School Breakfast. Most importantly, we talked to the students and learned why they like Breakfast and observed how they like to eat with their friends.
Some of the students shared their love for cereal, others prefer waffles, but overall they all shared that they love Breakfast because it tastes good! Take a look into our visit with these wonderful students in a NEW Breakfast Week Video! You can watch on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube. |

Grab n Go Breakfast is a Hit!
For Breakfast, Roosevelt Middle School has a Grab n Go cart and line service. The dining team here offers a combination of hot breakfast items and cold breakfast items, always paired with a fruit, and they offer it to students with a "Good Morning" and a smile! Grab n Go breakfast reaches students where they're at when they arrive at school, so if they don't plan to go to the serving line, they can still eat a nutritious meal. We had a great time talking with students, even ones who didn't eat school breakfast that day, to get an understanding of what they do eat for breakfast so they can better grow and learn.
When asked how breakfast makes them feel, one student shared, "Breakfast makes me feel energized because when I eat breakfast, my brain is more ready to go in the day."
Food access matters! |
We encourage everyone to nourish themselves in the morning to start the day energized! It's never too early to start the conversation about the power of food with your students or youth, and when having those conversations, don't forget to talk about school food!
Thank you for celebrating National School Breakfast Week with us!
