School Food Cultivates Community
Thank you for being a part of this community in an effort to nourish SFUSD students!

SFUSD School Food Featured by Eater

In partnership with School Food Professionals and the Chef Ann Foundation, we were recently featured by the culinary publication, Eater. Chef Josh kindly agreed to be interviewed so he can share his passion for not just food, but school food! He's seen Student Nutrition Services through many iterations of school food and is the perfect person to express what's possible when infrastructure supports the needs of students.

Watch this video to hear what Chef Josh has to say about school food, the students he serves, the wonderful team he works with, and the future of student nutrition services!

Black History Month with Student Nutrition Services

Lorraine Bowser has worked with Student Nutrition Services for 35 years! She is an outstanding advocate for the importance of school food, works collaboratively to improve the student experience, and as a Union Area Representative she also stands up for her peers.

At Downtown High School, the students she serves nutritious food to have begun referring to her as "Auntie", which is the perfect example that food cultivates community.

We are incredibly proud to have Lorraine on our team and are so thankful for the work she's done. See last year's blog to meet more of our dining staff and keep an eye on social media for Lorraine's video!

Spreading the Love on Valentine's Day

The entire SNS team contributed to a special Valentine's Day Breakfast to show appreciation for some of our collaborators across the district.

Handmade breakfast sandwiches, including a vegetarian option, and an assortment of fruit made for a great start to the day!

The relationships we cultivate across the district simply enable us to care for students to the best of our ability. Thank you to all of our partners!

Upcoming Events

National School Breakfast Week - March 3-7

National School Breakfast Week is coming up on March 3-7, let's get ready to celebrate!

Did you know that Breakfast is FREE to every SFUSD Student, every school day?

This year, SNS is celebrating the expansion of our breakfast program through a variety of Breakfast After the Bell launches across the district. Our Child Nutrition Programs Supervisor, Anthony Calegari, has jumped in to help expand access to breakfast for students by working with admin at nearly 10 new sites to begin Breakfast in the Classroom, Grab n Go Breakfast, and Second Chance Breakfast. Breakfast menus are available online at sfusd.edu/menus.

School Breakfast Week is a time to celebrate:

  • the efforts put forth to encourage healthy morning habits for students.
  • the work that dining staff put into providing nourishing food that students enjoy.
  • the work being done to expand Breakfast through Breakfast in the Classroom and Grab n Go Breakfast programs.
  • Increased Breakfast Participation!
How you can celebrate:
  1. Have your students write a thank you note to your very own SNS Dining Staff! They work hard every day to serve breakfast, lunch, and supper, free of charge to students. They'd love to hear from you.
  2. Use one of our National School Breakfast Week Activity Sheets!
  3. Share with students about the origin of School Breakfast (right here in the Bay Area!) at www.pbs.org/video/independent-lens-free-breakfast-program/
  4. Post this NSBW flyer around campus to boost Breakfast Awareness!
  5. Talk about what makes breakfast so important and how simple changes can help students feel fueled throughout the day!
March is Nutrition Month!

It's the perfect time to share how the food we eat impacts our bodies. Food has the power the change how we feel, give us energy, boost our immune system, and improve brain functioning. Did you know that food can be both tasty and highly impactful in your life?

Share these flyers with your community to share that March is Nutrition Month and a few fun facts!

New Menu Items This Semester

This semester alone we've introduced 14 new menu items at all of our sites across the district! It's a team effort to get new items on the menu, including:
  • Our Student Engagement Coordinator who plans tastings, checks feedback forms, and collects in person feedback at schools
  • Our Culinary Teams who propose new menu items based on either student suggestions, supply changes, or new ideas (Both Refresh and Revolution Foods)
  • Site Staff collaboration to support in-person student tastings
Once we have a majority positive response from enough students, then a new menu item gets added to the monthly menu!

Newest menu items include: Sweet Chili Chicken Meatballs, Chicken Pasta Salad, Chicken Dumplings, Oatmeal with Blueberries, and Pineapple Teriyaki Chicken, RFC Bowl with Mashed Potatoes, Asian Chicken Salad, Bagel with Cream Cheese, Taco Pasta Bolognese, Rebellious Spicy Sandwich, Fish Filet Sandwich, French Dip Sandwich au jus, Ham Sandwich w/ Tomato Soup, Sun Butter Fruit Parfait

Presentation to Middle & High School Health Educators

Future Dining Experience Team & Culinary Team present to Middle and High School Health Educators and provide a food tasting.
Student Nutrition Services collaborates with many health and food focused groups across the district to help increase awareness of the ins and outs of school food. Most recently we joined the Middle and High School Health Educators for a School Food tasting and intro to school food presentation. We discussed free student meals, nutrition and wellness policy, compliant meals, and the difference between our meal programs. It was a great opportunity to connect with educators who are so passionate about educating our students on health and wellness.

Refresh Tasting at MLK Jr. Middle School

This tasting was made possible through collaboration of our Student Engagement Coordinator, Gillian, with the Community Health Outreach Worker (CHOW) at MLK Jr. Middle School.

We were able to have students taste potential new menu items and vote "YES!" if they would like to see it on the menu. The sample items included grilled cheese and tomato soup, a french dip sandwich with roast beef, and a new take on the yogurt parfait. Not only was it fun, but it was very informative and helpful as students provided thoughtful feedback.

In response to trying the roast beef sandwich, one student said, "It's a 10 out of 10!"
