A New Year in Student Nutrition Services
Thank you for being a part of this community in an effort to nourish SFUSD students!

Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Food justice takes commitment, community, and consistency. Student Nutrition Services in SFUSD and across the state provide students with an invaluable service to combat food insecurity by offering free breakfast, lunch, and supper daily. Today we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who fought for holistic justice, including food justice. His teachings ring true to this day in SFUSD SNS as we try to serve the whole child.

“I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality and freedom for their spirits.” - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

We strive to fulfill students nutritional needs every school day with food they love, so they can be the best students they can be. We hope you take a moment to celebrate and acknowledge MLK and his impact today.

New Menu Items This Semester

This semester we have new menu items across the district from Turkey Taco Pasta and Fish & Chips at Refresh sites to new soup options at Heat & Serve Sites (primarily elementary schools and a few middle and high schools), we're excited for students to have some new fresh choices!

Before we add new offerings to the menu, our Student Engagement Coordinator, Culinary Team, and Revolution Foods representatives work hard to offer as many taste tests to students as possible. Students provide valuable feedback and even offer their own ideas.

Share the Love of Nutrition for Valentine's Day!

As you begin to plan for Valentine's Day celebrations at school sites, please keep the Wellness Policy top of mind. Celebrations can be fun and nutritious!

  • Planning a celebration on campus? Please schedule all celebrations after lunch time, so students can still enjoy a nutritious lunch before the party!
    • Dining staff order meal quantities far in advance, so any meal time celebrations lead to excess food waste. Please help us keep food waste down!
  • Ensure any food offered at the celebration meets SFUSD’s Nutrition Guidelines (focus on offering fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, lean proteins, or whole grain items).
  • You can also opt for festive activities in place of celebrating with treats.

Together, we can create a healthy school environment all year long!

New Program Launches

Express Window at T. Marshall HS

Exterior window at Thurgood Marshall High School for students at lunch.
An express window offers prepared complete meals (grains, protein, fruit and/or veggies) in to-go containers for students to enjoy.

We are opening alternative serving lines across middle and high schools in an effort to reduce student wait times and encourage meal participation. So far we have seen students at T. Marshall taking advantage of the shorter wait times at this window, hopefully soon seeing an overall increase in meal participation.
Breakfast After the Bell Expansion
Breakfast After the Bell (BAB) is a program that provides additional time for breakfast outside of the typical serving time. Under the BAB umbrella, there are a few variations to fit the needs of each school. The goal — to increase student participation in School Breakfast starting with improved access.

Programs Under the BAB Umbrella
  • Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC)
  • 2nd Chance Breakfast
  • Grab N’ Go Breakfast
Last semester we launched new Grab N Go and Breakfast in the Classroom programs at three middle schools. By the end of the semester, we intend to launch up to 5 more programs across grade levels.
