This Week in Student Nutrition Services
Thank you for being a part of this community in an effort to nourish SFUSD students!

Happy Thanksgiving to All Who Celebrate!

All across the district, every student was offered a special holiday meal sometime this month. From the littlest students we serve to our amazing high school students, everyone who chose to, got to have a bit of holiday cheer in the serving line and dining space. Our culinary team, who create the menus, worked with dining staff at every site to perfect the recipe (including a Veggie option), adapt to infrastructure differences, and ensure students had delicious food for a special holiday meal.

This season, Student Nutrition Services is especially thankful for our vast team of school food professionals who work incredibly hard to provide hundreds of daily meals (in some cases nearly a thousand meals a day) per school site. We're also incredibly thankful to be a consistent resource for nourishment that students can rely on every school day; food access is something we're thankful to provide.

We hope everyone gets to enjoy their favorite holiday foods at home!

A Field Trip for Zaida T. Rodriguez Students

A class from Zaida T. Rodriguez Early Education School planned a field trip to our McAteer Culinary Center to visit the school farm, tour the kitchen, meet all of the McAteer team members, and enjoy a meal together.

These students, accompanied by their teacher and a few parent chaperones, learned what produce is being grown at the farm, how the farm has been a gathering place for community events, and that their daily meals come from the McAteer Culinary Center. The dining team enjoyed meeting their youngest customers and welcoming them into the space!

Food Resources During the Fall Break

Fall Break Notice: From Nov. 25 through Nov. 29, Student Nutrition Services will not be serving meals for any sites K-13. Early education sites are still in session on November 25 and Nov. 26 and will have meals as usual.

Please share the available food resources around the city during the break with your community. Please remember that nutrition and food access are vital to wellbeing, especially during the holidays.

The most notable improvements include: A new walk-in freezer trailer and serving line at Lowell High School, a new walk-in, new prep table and removal of old equipment at Aptos Middle, a new walk-in and sink at Presidio Middle, and a new serving line, walk-in, and digital display at Willie Brown Middle.

Don't Forget to Read our eBook!
Transforming the Student Dining Experience | An eBook to Celebrate
It may not be National School Lunch Week anymore, but for SFUSD it’s always a time to celebrate the importance and power of school food. Over the last 10 years, SFUSD Student Nutrition Services has been partnering with community organizations to elevate the student dining experience.

What does that mean?
It means taking a deep dive into every aspect of school food from the food quality to the built environments that students dine in. The results have included the launch of our Refresh Program at 21 middle and high schools across the district, the renovation of 5 kitchens, and the redesign of 82 dining spaces. All of which has impacted over 42,000 students!

We learned that the investment in school food infrastructure equates to improvements in food quality and student experience. This entire journey has been captured into a book, Transforming the Student Dining Experience, which you can read on our website.

Student Nutrition Services strives to nourish our students with Good Food every school day. Learn about how School Food has improved in SFUSD by reading the eBook!
Seasonal Reminders
November Harvest of the Month | Pears
Try some of our suggestions at home!
The November Harvest of the Month is Pears! Pears are a wonderful addition to salads, can be eaten sliced fresh, or enjoyed with any kind of nut butter on toast! They are very versatile! Our Refresh menu includes pears often to fulfill the fruit requirement for meals. This month students may also get to enjoy them in their yogurt parfaits. Our Revolution Foods menu typically incorporates pears to fulfill the fruit requirement, and incorporates other seasonal fruit each month!

View our November Harvest of the Month poster to learn more about Apples. You're welcome to print them for your school, office, or home! It even includes easy ways to incorporate Apples into your at home meals.
