SNS Emphasizes Student Engagement this Nutrition Month |
Nutrition Month has kept our SNS teams busy! We dove into student education and engagement to help build a strong food culture of well-informed students who feel like they have an outlet for their voices to be heard.
Ways we engaged this month:
- Organized a school wide tasting session at Marina Middle School to collect feedback for potential new menu items for next school year.
- Held a student focus group at Bessie Carmichael Middle School, conducted in partnership with the Wellness team, to provide feedback on current menu items.
- Led students from John O'Connell High School's Culinary Entrepreneurship Program on tours that provided insight into the daily operations and services at Marina Middle School and McAteer Culinary Center, both of which go above and beyond to provide daily allergy meals, early education meals, and other meal accommodations SNS provides.

Did you know that SFUSD nutrition standards surpass that of the USDA and CA? |
To nourish our students with good food that they love is one of Student Nutrition Services primary goals. |
In 2016, SFUSD and Student Nutrition Services realized that the nutrition regulations provided by the USDA and the state of CA weren't enough for our students, and chose to make our own district Nutrition Guidelines that surpass what the government requires. The Nutrition Guidelines can be found at sfusd.edus/bewell to download. We are proud to serve food that meets one of the highest nutritional standards in the country.
For example, our Nutrition Guidelines outline detailed prohibited additives that you will never find in the food we serve, this list can be found on page 5 of the Nutrition Guidelines. |

Reminder For Summer Program Managers Who Want Meal Service |
SFUSD's Student Nutrition Services (SNS) is proud to offer summer meals to your students this summer. The summer meals program serves healthy meals to youth 18 years and younger and to individuals older than 18 with disabilities during the summer months at SFUSD schools. The goal of this program is to alleviate hunger for vulnerable youth when school is not in session. This year, SNS intends to serve breakfast and lunch to programs.
To receive meals at your program held on an SFUSD campus this summer, please complete this application by March 29, 2024. SNS cannot guarantee meal service on the first day of summer programming if your program completes the application after the deadline. Please complete one application per program. This application is intended to be completed by the summer program manager or coordinator (NOT the families enrolled in the program). We recognize that you may not have all of the information finalized yet that is asked in the application. Please complete the application to the best of your ability at this time and information can be updated as it becomes available.
If this message doesn't apply to you, please feel free to share with your contacts that it may impact! Thank you for your interest in helping increase food access for San Francisco youth over the summer!

March Harvest of the Month | Root Vegetables |
Chicken Adobe with rice and seasonal roasted veggies prepared at Marina Middle School. |
March equals root veggies! On top of our Culinary Team conducting near-daily tastings across multiple schools, beets and other root veggies have been incorporated into our March menu. By incorporating seasonal veggies into the menu, students get an added variety and an opportunity to try new, potentially unfamiliar foods that are nutritious and delicious. Pictured above is a meal from one of our Refresh Program sites, most middle and high schools receive this menu due to available infrastructure and space to cook at those school sites. We're excited that Revolution Foods, who we partner with to provide meals to elementary schools and a handful of middle and high schools, has also incorporated root veggies into their March menu!
View our March Harvest of the Month poster to learn more about Root Veggies. You're welcome to print them for your school, office, or home! It even includes easy ways to incorporate veggies into your at home meals. |
